soaproot

Wavy blue green leaves in a basal rosette support 2 foot stalks of graceful white flowers that open in early evening. Native Americans used the root for soap and glue, and roasted them for food. Found from coastal bluffs to woodlands, in sun or light shade, quite drought tolerant. Good in dry gardens. Bay Area native.
